英語的情態(tài)動詞有很多，往往具有自己的詞義，但并不完全，也不能單獨作句子的謂語，需要與動詞原形連用。下面我們所討論的僅限于科技英語中常使用的情態(tài)動詞may 和 might的譯法：

1. 表示許可、可能、不確定

可譯為“可以”、“也許”、“可能”等。如：

* Drives requiring varying speeds, such as fans, blowers, or pumps, may be driven by wound-rotor induction motors.

需要變速驅(qū)動的裝置，如電扇.鼓風機或水泵可由線繞式轉(zhuǎn)子感應電動機驅(qū)動。

* These curves suggest that they might be drawn by a plotter under control of a computer.

這些曲線意味著它們可以由計算機控制的繪圖儀畫出來。

* This may account in part for its inability to eradicate those chronic infection in which a majority of organisms are intracellular.

這可以部分地說明它為什么不能根治那些細菌多位于細胞內(nèi)的慢性感染。

2. 表示可能性

可譯為“可能”、“會”、“也許”等。如：

* Pluto may well be an intermediate object between planets and comets.

冥王星很可能是行星和彗星之間的中間物。
