形容詞后綴-ous來自拉丁語。它可以充當派生后綴與名詞結(jié)合，也可以充當原生后綴與名詞性的詞根相結(jié)合。的基本意義為having?（具有…的）或full of?（充滿…的）。此外還可以表示 having the nature of ?(有…特性的)，of ~ (…的），like ~ (像…的），practising?(從事…的）等意義。由于拉丁構(gòu)詞的影 響，-ous在與詞根結(jié)合時，有 -eous , - ious , - uous , -itous , - tious , -ukms等異體，這是需要留神的。
